Do various things with chopsticks

Tradition and Culture

Using chopsticks properly is an important part of Japanese dining etiquette.

  1. Holding Chopsticks: Hold the top chopstick between your thumb and index finger, while supporting the bottom chopstick with your ring finger. The top chopstick should be the one that moves, while the bottom one remains stationary.
  2. Avoid Crossing Chopsticks: When you set your chopsticks down, place them neatly on a chopstick rest (hashioki) if one is provided. Do not cross them over each other or leave them sticking up in a bowl of rice.
  3. No Sticking Chopsticks in Rice: It’s considered rude and a reminder of funeral rites to stick your chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice.
  4. Don’t Pass Food Chopstick-to-Chopstick: This action resembles a ritual performed during funeral ceremonies and is considered taboo. If you need to pass food to someone, place the food on their plate.
  5. Avoid Pointing with Chopsticks: Pointing with chopsticks is considered impolite. Keep your chopsticks in your hand or set them down when you are not using them.
  6. Do Not Use Chopsticks to Move Dishes: Avoid using your chopsticks to move plates or bowls around the table.
  7. Don’t Use Chopsticks to Spear Food: Chopsticks should be used to pick up food, not to spear it.
  8. Place Chopsticks Down Neatly: When you are done eating, place your chopsticks back on the chopstick rest, or neatly to the side of your plate or bowl.
  9. Don’t Rub Chopsticks Together: If you receive disposable wooden chopsticks (waribashi), do not rub them together. This can be seen as an insult to the quality of the chopsticks.
  10. Wait Before Starting to Eat: In a formal setting, wait for everyone to be served and for the host to start eating before you begin eating.

By following these guidelines, you will demonstrate respect for Japanese dining customs and make a positive impression.
